okay i cannot stand to read these comments any longer. just because she wrote a poem about this doesn't mean that she is only using this to win a contest. this poetry slam is a way for people to vent to people that will get it. this is the form of expression that she chose to describe this horrific experience. she is getting over it and is able to talk about it in public. this poem is a great work of art.

Just because you look it up in the dictionary doesn't mean you can always empathize. I don't understand why you feel it's for a pity win either. By its very nature, art is meant to manipulate the emotions and thoughts of its viewers. Would you call it art if she had done a piece on how she went to the store, bought some chips, then came home and watched TV for an hour? Not to say that that couldn't be art in some context somewhere, but you get the idea...

Shock value is cool as long as its in good taste and not mainly just to win a contest. Actually Im sure a lot of people can understand what it is or can be like to be raped. All you have to do is see it or hear about it once happening or perhaps look in a dictionary; let the imagination go from there. You say yourself, "that can allow the audience to sympathize, or even empathize, with rape victims." This alone shows that u understand how she is trying to manipulate the audience for the pity win

And how is she trivializing the subject? Artists and musicians paint and sing about tender subjects all the time, even if they haven't experienced them personally. Perhaps it does make some rape victims feel horrible, but then again so do movies and songs about death, affairs, and other forms of violence to people who experienced THOSE traumatic events. How can you ask people to put themselves in the mindset of a rape victim, but when an actual victim approaches you - you call her a psycho? The point IS shock value. Most people can't even picture what it's liked to be raped. Even if the actual rape experience is not this dramatic, this girl's performance shocks people into feeling at least SOMETHING that can allow the audience to sympathize, or even empathize, with rape victims they may know who can't express the feeling on their own.

I disagree with you dublplus what is happening here is that these teens have had the chance to voice what has been inside of them. I like what i'm hearing at the same time if you check out the emotions and the words that are being said they are expressing feelings of kids, either their are having or someone close to them are hearing. it's not an requirements its feelings that has been locked up. Take it from someone whose a writer, i was told to write down my nightmares that turned 2 16 books

agreed. if i had merely read this poem - i would be more impressed then just reading it. im not saying the content is no good, nor the composition. the delivery is godawful (in my opinion) if others get off on it - power! all art is in the eye of the beholder, and that being said - yes I could do better - though you might not think so after viewing. i would.

fair enough, its 'SLAM' poetry. so lets all compete for who can sound the most emotionally disturbed and maybe we'll land the gold medal. lame. as mentioned before, this poem is about a heart broken. original! this kid is acting, or will have to depend on acting if he ever wants to deliver this in a coupla years, after a coupla more girlfriends. its just self involved bragadoccio and i find it disgusting. metaphors, similies, bah- canine rectal cavities offer better analogies.

all these kids are talented, and have something to say, but imho this 'urban' poetry is steeped a bit much in overly dramatic delivery almost to the point its been made a requirement - which good poetry needs not. its like they cant get into the finals unless they act like theyre gonna choke on the words. for that matter, all the topics are a steeped a bit in negetivity. and i know theres positive things in urbania too. so please. too much acting. not enough poem. that aside, *applause.

it's not as important as other subjects to some, but it's an amazing definition of that first love lost...maybe you forgot what that felt like but this kind of poetry is to put feelings into words, didnt you feel like you wanted to die? almost all of the people i know that got dumped by their first love were completely selfish to their feelings and disregarded the world because it didn't matter anymore...not for a few months at least
