If you have a debit card you can pull money straight out of it from the ATMs at 711, I did this when I went to Japan. I does charge you, but only 5$ and the exchange rates were not inflated at all.

I'm not sure why credit cards aren't more widely used here - I'm sure there is an interesting cultural reason. And yeah - "loyalty cards" are used everywhere here - the electronics store, the convenience store, the donut shop - you name it.

This one of the main things I had questions about when becoming a JET. Thank you very much for covering this. How much do you typically spend on groceries a week? I will actually be going over there with my current fiance (will be my wife by then). Do you think this could make things a little more difficult money wise? She would not head to Japan for 1 to 2 months until I got situated in and prepared for her arrival.

I had a few fun lessons on December 10th at my smallest elementary school, which is located up in the mountains above Taisha.
It was a nice day sunshine wise, so I turned on my camera and shot a little bit of footage driving back to my Jr High at about 12:30 in the afternoon.

Ah, such a pretty drive! At times it would remind me of driving in Wisconsin along the Mississippi or through the Rockies. We (my daughter and I) love the rural life aspect since it's our life here. HA! very nice vid! it was also sort of hilarious at times :P BTW! I tried to track your way on google earth and i did find the fork and al.. but not the village where you started out. I did find "saginoura" and you'd drive by "sugiura" after that. I also found that the road you took is about twice as long to get to Taisha as the road you'd have taken if you'd have turned left at the fork. But maybe you are allowed to drive faster on that wider road? It does look really nice out there.

they vary the menu a decent amount, but it's always well balanced and includes certain foods, and everyday is milk. There is a ton of stuff I don't eat - but I am a super picky eater - ironic since I'm so fat. :)

I have some small shogakko where they make their own lunches in house, but both of my JHs have it trucked in everyday. Taisha is smaller and has its own kyushoku company whereas this school uses the larger Izumo facility. Both make good lunches tho. Taisha - best placement in Japan! :D

Japanese summer rain is not so bad... it's lukewarm... I felt I was kinda attractive to Japanese women (of my age at least), I felt more popular than at home. In an adult sense uninteresting, but by far the most fun group were the kids. 6-12yo girls simply loved me, climbed on my back, had me carry them around, swing them around with my arms... and I ended up being called "Kinnikuman" and "otokorashii". Great times. :-)

My buddy up north was an ALT at a high school for bad/dumb chicks. They used to flash the gash at him daily, and deep throat hot dogs and what not in his face at lunch. He held his shit together for awhile, but finally he snapped and humped a couple of them. The last couple months he worked there, he went on the absolute warpath and nailed a bunch more. I wouldn't be able to take that. I'd probably snap sooner than he did. Good thing I was a junior high JET. My buddy didn't get fired, though.

well, the one incident I have personal knowledge of was pretty innocent and the JET acted properly. I have heard of JETs being dismissed for sleeping with students, but I never knew any personally. That and drugs are about the only two things that mean automatic firing and deportation.

This video shows my rather quick commute to my closer Jr High. But you get a sense of how rural and residential a place Taisha is, despite the shaky cam. :)

30 km/h does only look slow, but it isn't. If you are able to do the 100 m dash in 12 seconds you reach that speed. I want you to run into a wall at full sprint and then repeat the phrase: "30 km/h is really slow!" :-) I'm always amused how they can call an all-English event "international". They should rather call it "Eigo no Hi". Wow, five minutes at that speed. You could walk I guess.

yep - there are onsen virtually everywhere in Japan. Shimane has some very famous and very beautiful onsen. But I don't go that often. It's just not my thing, so I won't be making a vlog about onsen. Plus, I'm not sure I could take video inside one anyways - :)
