Marianne Faithfull - Scarborough Fair Posted by: Barndog44
Video duration: 184 seconds Simon & Garfunkel's Scarborough Fair never charted in its own right in the UK, but it was a track on the EP Mrs. Robinson which peaked at no. 9 in 1969. This is Marianne Faithfull's version of the song. It seems odd to hear a man's song sung by a woman as this is. Other examples are Gracie Fields' Sally and Judy Garland's Embraceable You. Lord Rockingham's XI - Hoots Mon Posted by: Barndog44
Video duration: 133 seconds Lord Rockingham's XI was a group of musicians cobbled together in 1958 to play on the ITV show Oh Boy, which in turn, was thought up by pop impresario Jack Good, as a rival to the hugely successful BBC show Six-Five Special which went on the air a year earlier. Hoots Mon was a jazzed-up version of the old Scottish song A Hundred Pipers, and it reached no. 1 in October 1958. Albert W. Ketelbey - Bells Across The Meadows Posted by: Barndog44
Video duration: 308 seconds Here's a wonderfully evocative piece by that Old Master of light classical music Albert W. Ketelbey. The picture this piece of music conjures up for me is of a former, less complicated age, where, on a beautiful English Sunday evening in the summer countryside, a family is strolling to church. David Whitfield - Cara Mia Posted by: Barndog44
Video duration: 188 seconds In my biased opinion, this has to be one of the greatest British records ever produced. The combination of David Whitfield's voice, the heavenly girl choir, and Mantovani's masterful "cascading strings" accompaniment is nothing short of breathtaking. So there! It reached no. 1 in the UK charts in 1954. Related: 1954, cara, cascading, david, mantovani, mia, pop, strings, whitfield Display Video Comments | Hide Video Comments | Add Comment |
